Perhaps they are afraid. I realize I sometimes appear ... intimidating. It is not my intention. Or, I suppose that it is, but only in the sense that I wish to dissuade those who would foolishly attempt to battle me.

well i'll agree that your appearance was a little intimidating before but it was necessary, wasn't it? and we only saw it because you were trying to help us
besides... spending time with people is one way for them to get to know you better, and then they'd be less afraid of you when fighting wasn't involved
